SHOOT-OUT WIN in Sheffield

The GMB Panthers gained revenge for last weekend's loss to arch-rivals Sheffield with a shoot-out victory in Yorkshire on Saturday night.

Panthers were the better team in a goal-less first period and took the lead early in the second period with captain Jordan Fox, set up by Carolina Hurricanes' forward Anthony Stewart and Pat Galivan, firing home from the blueline.

Fox played defence to help cover for injured coach Corey Neilson who was behind the bench alongside assistant Rick Strachan. Jon Weaver was also out with a broken hand.

Sheffield capitalised well on a poor line-change by the Nottingham defence and turned in an equaliser before the end of the second period as the visitors failed to convert their possession into chances.

The Steelers had a lengthy spell of dominance in the final period and Panthers had some brilliant saves from Craig Kowalski to thank for keeping the game level pegging on the scoreboard. Neilson took his Time-out with 6.43 to go and that steadied the nerves and the balance of play and the match progressed to overtime and then a penalty shoot-out.

In the shoot-out Matt Francis and David Ling sweetly converted Nottingham's first two efforts while at the other end Kowalski made two more saves to bag the extra point for the GMB Panthers.

Rick Strachan and Anthony Stewart join us on Panthers Radio with Xynomix to review the match.

Panthers' NHL winger makes his home debut on Tuesday night against the Cardiff Devils. Tickets now on sale. He had a strong opening period and second, but admits in his interview that he faded in the third, but he's raring to get on the ice in front of the home crowd on Tuesday.
