Heads up week – Baseline testing for head injuries

Panthers continue baseline testing support for players. The club teamed up with an Australian based on-line testing company last season and are again using it as part of their head injury protocol this season. Throughout the course of this season the GMB Nottingham Panthers will be using Headsmart Concussion Management Systems, which provides computerised concussion brain testing. After the success of using it last season, Panthers want to continue their off ice commitment to player safety and well-being. Team physio Scott poundall says "Since using headsmart we have been able to objectively assess any head injuries to coincide with our other concussion protocols. The information provided has played a key role in our decision making and the peace of mind it has provided our players has been invaluable." Head Coach Corey Neilson stated "Our sport is a physical game where big men collide at great speed. From time to time my players get "their bell rung". Headsmart just takes away the guesswork involved in evaluating whether a player can return to action or not. Baseline testing just makes sense and Headsmart provides our club with an efficient service as well as peace of mind in the evaluation process." Headsmart has also been well received in the dressing room by the players, with one stating "Having suffered with concussions in the past, baseline and after injury testing has given me the confidence to know that if the worse should happen again, there will be accurate data available to me to know the extent of any head injury". Headsmart is aimed at parents, coaches, teachers, school nurses, medical practioners and allied health care professionals, providing a range of packages to suit anyone from junior sports participants to professional sports organisations.
