Great Britain forward Ollie Betteridge says he was happy to play his part with his first GB point in Wednesday’s 5-3 victory over Poland at the World Championship Division 1 Group A in Budapest.

The 22-year-old forward combined with Nottingham Panthers team-mate Rob Lachowicz to set up Jonathan Phillips for an empty-net goal in the last minute.

“I was happy to play a role in a really good victory,” said Betteridge. “Of course, it was nice to get an assist but the most important thing was the victory.

“We had to work our socks off to get back into the game after a disappointing second period.

“We showed great character to come back and beat a really good hockey team.”

GB now have a day off tomorrow ahead of Friday night’s game with Italy.

“We have made an unbelievable start to the tournament, but we cannot rest on our laurels,” continued the Nottingham-born forward.

“It is brilliant to be competing at such a high level but we still have two massive games to come – and we have to keep up our work rate for the rest of the tournament.”
