Nottingham Panthers beat Manchester Storm 4-3 after a shootout in the Challenge Cup at the Motorpoint Arena.

Darick Louis-John and Zach O'Brien returned to the line-up after missing last weekend's action. Mat Robson started between the pipes with Luca Sheldon as back-up.

It was part one of a weekend double-header with the two sides meeting at the AO Arena in Manchester tomorrow (Sunday) at 16:00.

Exciting four-goal first period
Max Grondin's feed from behind the net found Miikka Pitkänen to give Panthers an early lead (02:56).

Stephen Johnson broke clear of the Panthers defence to equalise (05:31) and Tim MacGauley's top-shelf finish from close-range turned the game on its head (07:59).

Panthers drew level when Ben Corbeil digged the puck out a mass of bodies after a goalmouth scramble to beat Drew DeRidder on the doorstep (12:07).

No goals in second period but Panthers on top
Panthers had so much of the possession in the second period but were unable to beat DeRidder.

Spencer Naas, Brandon Frattaroli, Matt Alfaro and Grondin all had chances to stretch Panthers' lead but each time DeRidder shut the door.

Corbeil scores a stunner
O'Brien and Tim Doherty combined for Corbeil to score with an absolute bullet from the right-circle on the powerplay for his second of the night (41:06).

Bradley Jenion's shot deflected past Robson to make it 3-3 (45:38) and send the game to overtime.

Doherty scores in shootout as Robson makes five saves
There were no goals in the extra period but Panthers secured the extra point thanks to a clinic by Robson.

The Panthers netminder saved all five of Storm's efforts while Doherty netted for Danny Stewart's side to secure the two points.
