Nottingham Panthers were beaten 6-3 by Cardiff Devils in the Challenge Cup at the Motorpoint Arena on Saturday night.

Mitch Fossier returned to the line-up after missing last weekend's action, but Matt Alfaro remains out of action following a post-season operation.

Jason Grande started between the pipes with Luca Sheldon as back-up.

Devils lead after first session
Panthers had the better of the opening five minutes with Tim Doherty setting-up Chase Peason who saw his shot from the slot blocked.

The visitors took the lead short-handed when Barrow's pass towards the net was deflected past Grande (06:15) and the Panthers netminder made two big close-range saves before the end of the period.

Three-goal second period put Panthers ahead
Panthers turned the game on its head with three goals inside the opening nine minutes of the second period.

The puck rebounded to Bryan Lemos to fire past Ben Bowns from the slot (21:03), before Matt Spencer and Didrik Henbrant combined to set-up Matt Marcinew on the doorstep (25:00).

David Noël's ripper from right-point deflected past Bowns (28:21), but former Panther Kristoff Kontos reduced the arrears on the powerplay from the left-circle (29:18).

Devils score four in third session to secure the points
Grande made a huge double save to deny Josh MacDonald and Brett Perlini, but could do nothing about Nolan Yaremko's tip in the slot as Devils equalised on the powerplay (48:18).

Cardiff then went ahead only 71 seconds later when Ben Davies buried the puck past Grande on the doorstep (49:29)

Devils wrapped the game up with two goals in nine seconds through Brandon Estes (58:36) and Cole Sanford (58:45).

Panthers are straight back into action tomorrow (Sunday 14th September) with a trip south to face Guildford Flames in the Challenge Cup (18:00 face-off).

Next at home: Sheffield Steelers on Saturday 20th September (19:00)
