Nottingham Panthers came from behind and scored two late goals to beat Sheffield Steelers 3-2 in the Challenge Cup at a sold-out Motorpoint Arena.

The two points saw Panthers move to the top of Group A with 11 points from eight matches, a point ahead of the Steelers who slip to second.

Matt Alfrao missed the game after picking up an injury in last Sunday's victory over Fife Flyers. Mat Robson started between the pipes with Kai Edmonds as back-up.

No goals in even first period
A tight first period saw both sides have seven shots on goal with Tim Doherty twice being denied by Matt Greenfield, while Chase Pearson and Gordie Ballhorn also went close.

At the other end, Robson made good saves to turn away efforts from Ivan Björkly-Nordström and Ryan Tait.

Doherty equalises for the Panthers
Max Grondin had a couple of chances early in the second period, before Steelers took the lead when Logan Roe's shot from left-point was redirected past Robson by Sean Collins (28:11).

Panthers equalised with a well-worked goal as Pearson fed Doherty who went top-shelf from the slot (38:39).

Panthers score twice to secure two points
Robson made great saves to deny Tait and Adam Rockwood, but could do nothing about Roe's shot from the high slot to put Steelers back ahead (46:16).

At the other end, Doherty and Ben Corbeil went close on the same shift and the momentum swung in favour of the Panthers in the closing stages.

Panthers piled on the pressure and after a massive goalmouth scramble, Zsombor Garát buried the puck past Greenfield from close-range (54:48).

Danny Stewart's side won the game on the powerplay when Zach O'Brien turned the puck to the slot and Corbeil used his strength to control the puck and fire past Greenfield (57:58).
