Nottingham Panthers beat Cardiff Devils 3-2 in a thrilling Elite League game at the Motorpoint Arena on Sunday night.

Panthers led 2-0 but Cardiff scored two third-period goals before Danny Stewart's side won the shootout with three from three, while Kevin Carr turned away all three attempts from the Devils.

Carr started between the pipes with Luca Sheldon as back-up. Matt Marcinew returned from injury and replaced Nolan Volcan in the line-up, while Jarod Hilderman came in for Cooper Zech.

Alfaro puts Panthers ahead at first intermission
Chase Pearson and Hilderman had chances in the opening stages for the Panthers while at the other end, Carr made good saves to deny Riley Brandt and Joey Martin on a Cardiff powerplay.

Panthers went ahead with a well-worked goal when a superb interchange of passing ended with Tim Doherty setting-up Matt Alfaro at the backdoor (13:05).

Marcinew scores on his return
Strong play from Mitch Fossier forced the turnover and Marcinew beat the Devils defence before sliding the puck under Christian Stoever (26:51).

Panthers were playing some great hockey as Brendan Harris shot just wide and Pearson went close, while Carr stood tall to stop Cardiff twice in quick succession from close-range.

Josh Tetlow dropped the gloves late in the period and had the better of his fight with Tyson Helgesen.

Devils fight back with two third-period goals
Stoever pulled off a top-class to deny Doherty at the backdoor and it proved a turning point as moments later the Devils responded to close the gap to one.

The shot from right-point by Brandon Estes was tipped past Carr by Ryan Barrow (50:16).

Cardiff equalised with just under two-and-a-half remaining as Estes' shot deflected past Carr off the skate of Kohen Olischefski at the backdoor (57:32).

Panthers take extra point in shootout
Overtime was end-to-end as Doherty and Harris shot just wide for the Panthers, while Carr made a big stop on Estes when Cardiff broke two-on-one.

In the shootout, Marcinew, Fossier and Doherty all beat Stoever while Carr stood firm on all three Cardiff attempts as Panthers secured the extra point.
