Nottingham Panthers were beaten 6-2 by Guildford Flames on Sunday afternoon at the Motorpoint Arena.
Despite the defeat, Panthers will go into Christmas top of the Elite League table. There's a three-way tie with Sheffield Steelers and Cardiff Devils on 34 points but Panthers have more regulation-time wins.
Jason Grande started between the pipes with Kevin Carr as back-up, while Luca Sheldon was healthy scratch. Chase Pearson returned to the line-up but Panthers were without Mitch Fossier, Brendan Harris, Didrik Henbrant and Jordan Kelsall.
Flames lead after three-goal burst
Guildford hit the Panthers with three goals in the first period including the opener after just 71 seconds when Mathieu Gosselin broke clear of the defence from the blueline (01:11).
Jake Coughler netted on a one-timer at the backdoor (07:46) and Josh Waller's rebound on the doorstep made it 3-0 to the visitors (11:00), which saw a change in net as Carr replaced Grande.
Panthers struggled to create any offence with the best chances falling to David Noël, Matt Spencer and Finlay Ulrick.
Lemos scores but Flames stretch their lead
Pearson fed Bryan Lemos who delayed his shot, pulled Justin Fazio out of position and went top-shelf to reduce the arrears (25:05).
Guildford scored short-handed through Nick Seitz as his shot rebounded off a Panthers stick and back into his path (25:40), before Waller put away a rebound for his second goal of the night (33:26).
Panthers' short bench got even shorter when Noël left the action in the second period because of injury.
Alfaro scores superb goal but Flames secure big win
Panthers captain Matt Alfaro scored the goal of the game as he broke into the zone at speed, beat his man and fired past Fazio for an outstanding finish (55:28).
Danny Stewart lifted Carr for the extra skater and despite some initial possession for the Panthers, Flames set the seal on their win through Cole Ully's empty-net goal (56:10).
