PANTHERS SIGN HENRY NEWELL ON TWO-WAY CONTRACT

The Panthers have signed Nottingham-born defenceman Henry Newell on a two-way contract with NIHL side Peterborough Phantoms.

The 20-year-old - who trained with the Panthers at last year's pre-season camp - returns to the UK after a spell in North America and most recently in Sweden.

He began his hockey career in the junior section of Nottingham Ice Hockey Club and spent three seasons at the Canadian International Hockey Academy from 2021 to 2024. In the 2022/23 season, he recorded the most points for a defenceman in the U17s Canadian Sport School Hockey League.

Newell moved to Vernal in the United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL) for the 2024/25 season and helped the Oilers win the National Championship. Last season, Newell played for Kalix HC in Sweden's U20s league.

Panthers Head Coach, Danny Stewart, said: "We had Henry up in camp last year and he left a good impression on us. He’s got good size and ability for his age - and didn't look out of place early in camp.

"Having him on a two-way with Peterborough allows us to work with him weekly through practice time and gives him the opportunity to play the necessary minutes in games for Peterborough to continue his development. I imagine he will most likely factor into some games for us as well. He’s a great kid with a great attitude and we are excited to work with him."

Newell said: "I am looking forward to linking up with the Panthers again. It was great to experience training camp last year, but to now train with the club throughout the season will be important to my progression.

"I will grab any opportunity for game time with the Panthers I can and I am also looking forward to continuing my development with Peterborough in the NIHL."
